ENGLISH BULLDOG PUPPY
THE CLOWN OF THE DOG WORLD DISCRIPTION
Bullies are: gentle, friendly, and adoring, with a mischievous dose of stubbornness, incessantly loyal to its family and are particularly fond of children. They usually get along well with other animals, and do best indoors. They are highly spirited as a puppy but usually grow calmer as adult hood appears. They prefer not to exercise and can easily overheat. DO NOT expect quiet when they sleep as they are prone to SNORING. When you get your new family member home, remember you don’t have a new puppy you have a new baby and family member. This new forever baby, like a human baby, need lots of love, sleep, more love, cuddling and sleep. When leaving their 1st home, mom and siblings and only humans they have ever known, can be scary. This is where they act like a 3 year old: Try to work out a routine that you can follow, Make it simple, your new toddler will need lots of guidance.
FOOD & WATER We feed 2/3 cups chow early morning and again early evening. (give them time expel, to we feed between 5 and 6 p.m.) You do not wont a fat Bullie!! Habits are good feed in the same location, water needs to be available both inside and outside of his house. We use an old cast iron dutch ovens for water (can’t drag that around as a pup. So if you are lucky that will never become a problem). I will send home enough food (Enhance) for 3 days; if you mix this with equal parts of a good adult food. your Bullie has been eating hard chow from 4 wks (if you go back to pup food you could have diarrhea, Pepto Bismol is excellent for this.). You can add a good vitamin if you wish. We change over to adult food at 7 wks. Many people disagree and feed pup food till 12 to 18 months. This is up to you. I feed a good quality chow + a vitamin (I use toddler vit cut in half) 1 tlb spoon cottage cheese occasionally or plain yogurt makes a nice treat. Vit C is good for the immune system and joint development. A slice of a real orange or a inexpensive Vit C chew once a week is a nice touch, but remember don’t over do it, a piece of carrot also makes a nice treat. TRAINING Bullies are a little stubborn keep thinking "3 YEAR OLD"; time, patience and consistency (you can try a time out chair, but it will probably get eaten). As all 3 year olds your new baby will try your patience. You are the boss. I know "its" funny and everything is cute. BAD HABITS??? Whatever you let them get away with now is what you are stuck with FOREVER. POTTY TRAINING Watch for the SIGNS. SNIFFING, CIRCLING, STANDING AT DOOR. Even with a doggy door, you have to pay attention until they have it patterned in their memory. Praise for correct action. Don’t scold unless you catch them in the act. There will be accidents, like a baby they don’t have the mental capacity or muscle control yet BE PATIENT. LEAD TRAINING Wait a few days before you start lead training. Let them be comfortable with you first. Use a light weigh collar (don’t buy a expensive studded collar till they are all grown up. Their wrinkles just let them roll off over their head anyway) Use the tug release while calling. Don’t make it a game but do offer praise when baby follows you correctly. GROOMING Brush at least 3 times a week if not more often. I don’t like bathing my Bullies more than once a month. On a weekly bases, rub corn meal into their coats. Gives them a good massage. Then brush this out using a stiff brush then a soft brush. Keep it away from eyes and inner ears. Use baby wipes in the deep wrinkles. Dry them using Q-tip dipped in baby power or corn starch, rub into the folds. Don’t forget the tail folds. Clean inside the ears with a damp cloth. When bathing don’t get water in their ears. I use a tube of lip balm on their nose to keep it soft and moist. Bullie nails are very strong if they play on dirt, gravel they will wear them down naturally. Then you must ck them and trim as much as needed. It is easer to file them down than to cut them. I do not believe in flee and tick shampoo and never use flee collars. I use a drop or 2 of natural Lavender oil on their bedding. This keeps flees and ticks away. HOUSING Bullies love to be indoors around their family. In the summer in a temperature controlled environment is essential, Bullies overheat fast and anything over 90+ degrees can be deadly. Be careful of slippery surfaces, hardwood floors, tile or linoleum. Bullies are born with loose joints and slipping can be hard on their joints. Your bedding does not need to be expensive or elaborate. I buy pillows, towels and blankets at yard sales. They wash easy and can be replaced without a lot of cost. I recommend a wire crate. All Bullies love having their own private retreat to go to when they want to be left alone. It is much easer on a Bullie if they sleep in their house, and wire crate ventilation is much better than plastic ones. TOYS NEVER GIVE: rawhide toys or pig ears, they can splinter, cause damage and choke your baby. Make sure any balls or toys are so large it won’t get stuck in their throat, No toys that make squeaky noises, Bullies are very inquisitive and they will find out what is making the noise and they WILL eat it. Stay with one piece solid toys In the Summer months when it is above 90+ degrees my babies enjoy laying around in their toddlers wadding pool, it’s the highlight of their day. DO NOT confuse this with swimming, they are very compact and will sink like a brick. I have a friend whose Bullie surfs and swims with her in Kona but he wears a special life jacket, that can be purchased on the internet. Love, love and more love that is what all 3 year olds wont, and GIMME, GIMME, GIMME is what they all say. Call me anytime and we will walk through it together.
